Durban art Deco Society AGM
19 November, 2017
This meeting was held at the Phansi Museum in Durban. Chairperson Donald Davies reported on events through the preceding year, including a walking tour through Durban’s old Point area, led by Prof Franco Frescura, a repeat outing to Ivanhoe (Queensburgh) and Heyfield (Kloof) led by Donald, the “Curries Fountain to Red Square” walk led by Len Rosenberg, and a visit to Coedmore Castle / Stainbank Memorial Gallery, led by Alison Keith. A preservation award had been made to Allan and Jane Wilks of Heyfield. Tribute was paid to founding members Jean Powell and Helen Labuschagne for their sterling work for the Society.
The guest speaker was Jeffrey Cole of Messaris Wapenaar Cole Architects, based in Rivonia, Gauteng. A well-illustrated talk took us through the history and architecture of 1930’s Johannesburg, Springs, Brakpan and Benoni, focusing on many excellent examples of Art Deco. Of particular interest was a collaborative effort between conservationists, the metro and local businesses to capitalise on a fine zone of Art Deco buildings in Springs.
