Durban Art Deco Society's POST CONGRESS Programme
DURBAN ART DECO SOCIETY
(Affiliated to ICADS - International Coalition of Art Deco Societies)Programme for the Post Congress Meeting of the 7th World Art Deco Congress Durban: 30th March - 4th April 2003
All lectures will be held at the NBS Botanic Gardens Education Centre, Sydenham Road
- Sunday 30th March
06.30 p.m - Mayoral Reception at Durban City Art Gallery.
Durban Art Gallery Art Deco Exhibition, opened by Prof Rodney Harber, Dales Bros Afro Art Deco Fashion show by D.I.T. textile students and others, dancers from the Fantastic Flying Fish Company and music by Roland Moses and friends Cocktails and light snacks
08.30 p.m - Formal Banquet at Royal Hotel Grill Room. (Dress: Art Deco, traditional or smart) with jazz music by Darius Brubeck (piano), J Robinson (sax) and Lex Futshane (bass).- Monday 31st March
09.00 a.m - Lecture by Dennis Claude, A Brief History of Durban Art Deco
10.00 a.m - Tour of Art Deco Buildings: Victoria Embankment, Smith and Aliwal Street, Cenotaph.
Midday - Light lunch at TransAfrica Express at the B.A.T., followed by a tour of the BAT Centre.
2.30 p.m - Visit to African Art Centre (talk on beadwork by Anthea Martin/Hlengewe Dube)
6.00 p.m - Fish barbeque at Joe Cool’s, Beachfront. Optional visit to Suncoast Casino if so desired- Tuesday 1st April
09.00 a.m - Lecture by Dennis Claude and Prof Walter Peters on Durban Art Deco Details.Exhibition of research work on Durban Art Deco by UND Architectural students.
10.00 a.m - Tour of Art Deco buildings: Broad and West Streets and Point Road
Midday - Lunch: curry lunch at Botanic Gardens NBS Education Centre
14.00 p.m - Lecture by Dennis Claude on The Grey Street Precinct.
15.00 p.m - Tour: Afro-Asian Deco, Grey, Prince Edward and Carlisle Streets.
6.30 p.m - NSA Gallery, Bulwer Road: Art Deco Photo Essay by The Durban Centre for Photography
Supper - NSA Arts Café: followed by Theatre performance with Ellis & Bheki.- Wednesday 2nd April
09.00 a.m - Illustrated lecture by Estelle Liebenberg on Durban’s famous sculptor, Mary Stainbank.
10.00 a.m - Tour of Berea South and Berea North Art Deco Buildings – visit to Berea Court
Lunch - Blue Zoo Restaurant in Mitchell Park.
14.30 p.m - Visit to Phansi Museum at 41 Cedar Road and Hindu Temples.
18.00 p.m - View Howard College Art Deco Rotunda, singers
Evening - Dinner and Wine tasting at TreveanCost of Post Congress Meeting for SA Residents
